Firefighters stop natural gas leak in Onalaska

ONALASKA, Wis. (WXOW) - The Onalaska Fire Department responded to a natural gas leak Tuesday morning on Industrial Boulevard.

It happened around 8:35 a.m. Crews digging in the area hit the natural gas line underground, according to the Onalaska Fire Chief Don Dominick.

Firefighters have to be extremely careful when responding to a natural gas leak, Dominick said. Factors like humidity and wind can alter their response.

"We maintain a safe perimeter and monitor where it goes into an explosive range, and monitor the safety of the people within that perimeter," Dominick said.

Xcel Energy turned off the gas to the surrounding buildings while firefighters worked to stop the leak.
