Mumps Reported in La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) The La Crosse County Health Department Wednesday announced the first confirmed case of the mumps.

There is one confirmed, and two suspected cases on the UW La Crosse campus.

Mumps is a viral illness that affects the salivary glands. It is spread by an infected person sneezing, or sharing eating or drinking utensils with others.

A vaccine is usually given at a very young age and is 80 to 90 percent effective.
