An anniversary for one of America's most iconic vehicles

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW)- The Ford Mustang celebrates its 50th anniversary today.

It first made its debut at the 1964 World's Fair in New York City.  It was an instant a hit. Ford sold more than 600,000 Mustangs that year.  These days, the company still sells just under 100,000 annually.  In the last 50 years, more than 8 million Mustangs have been sold.

In 1964, the Mustang's starting price was around $2,000. Now, one with all the options can top out at nearly $73,000.

But as far as an icon and a brand, the Mustang is more popular than ever.  Jansen Dahl, owner of Dahl Ford, said, "The reason why it was so popular is that it represented fun.  It represented everything that's American.  Strength, good looks and power.  It really just captured America's sentiments at that time."

Dahl Ford in Onalaska will have the 50th anniversary Mustang in their showroom in July.  The date is still to be determined.
