Project Mercy: Mar. 8-The View From The Mountain

The clinic is closed on Saturday. After performing 25 surgeries, the team deserves a break.

We decided to climb the beautiful mountain we’ve been staring at out our window. The trail is very steep, narrow, and rocky. Adding to the difficulty is the altitude. We started at 7,000 ft. above sea level. When we reach the top of the knoll we will be above 9,000 ft. The summit is 12,000 ft. everyone was huffing and puffing on the trail; everyone except the children we met along the way. It was crazy; kids as young as four, without shoes on, were running up and down the trail. Some of these kids walk this trail everyday to get to school. They begin walking before the sun rises. I don’t know how they stay on their feet.

People are not the only ones using the trail. We were stopped a number of times by herds of goats and donkeys. They know the way to their farms and are often found walking along trails or even on the roads all by themselves.

It took Mark and I three hours to reach the top of the knoll. The view from the top was amazing! Ethiopia is a beautiful place. I took a bunch of pictures, but they don’t do it justice. Despite the living conditions here, it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I’ll never forget my time here; especially on top of the mountain.
