Pitching Leads Viterbo to Doubleheader Sweep

La Crosse, Wis. – The Viterbo University baseball team got two complete game performances by two senior pitchers to help lead them to a 3-1 and 7-1 doubleheader sweep of Clarke University.

In game one, the V-Hawk offense sputtered for the first four innings but that was okay as V-Hawk pitcher Ben O'Reilly was keeping the Crusaders off the score board. Clarke University would threaten in the second inning but O'Reilly got out of it with a ground ball to strand three runners on base. Clarke would threaten again in the fourth and tried a squeeze bunt but Viterbo was not fooled and got the out at home. Viterbo would enter the fifth inning with no hits offensively but that would change as Brandon Beech led off with a double and Taylor Reinhardt followed with his first home run of the season.

Clarke would get on the board in the sixth inning with a run on one hit but the V-Hawks would get that run back in the sixth. Matt Watkins led off the sixth with a double and moved to third on a single by Steve Pascual.

Watkins then scored on a squeeze bunt by Pierce Belaustegui(SR/Henderson, Nev.). O'Reilly would give up a single in the seventh but that would be all for the Crusaders as he shut the door. O'Reilly (5-4) picks up the win by allowing just one run on five hits while striking out eight.

In the second game, the V-Hawks wasted no time scoring as Watkins led off the first inning with double and later scored on a single by Frankie Torres. Clarke got the run back in the third inning on two hits and an error. Viterbo would score a run in the fourth inning and then explode for five in the fifth. Shea Coates provided the biggest hit as he recorded a one out, two run double for the V-Hawks.

That would be all of the offense the V-Hawks would need as starting pitcher Evan Taylor (7-1) kept Clarke off balance all game. Taylor recorded his seventh win of the season by allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four. Offensively, the V-Hawks got multi hit games from Watkins, Pascual, Coates and Luigi Dolenti Coates also scored two runs and drove in two runs for the V-Hawks.

The double header sweep moves the V-Hawks to 23-15 overall and 12-6 in the MCC which is good enough for sole possession of first place. Clarke falls to 17-29 on the year and 5-13 in conference action. Viterbo will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they play a non-conference doubleheader with Waldorf College at the Viterbo University Outdoor Athletics Complex. The first game is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
