La Crosse Promise Receives Grant to Help Students Attend College

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – La Crosse Promise has been awarded a $40,879 Commit to College grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation. The grant will allow La Crosse Promise Future Centers to help students from underserved backgrounds attend college.

According to Harvard researchers, up to 40 percent of high school seniors who have been accepted to college upon graduation fail to attend in the fall. This so-called "summer melt" occurs disproportionately among students from traditionally underserved backgrounds—those from low-income households, students of color, first-generation college students, and those planning to attend a two-year college.

La Crosse Promise was one of only four community-based organizations receiving funding. Their grant proposal received the highest award in the state.

"Our staff researched best practices from throughout the country and then created a summer program that we hope will dramatically and immediately increase the percentage of graduating seniors who follow through with post-secondary plans," says Jerilyn Dinsmoor, La Crosse Promise Executive Director.

La Crosse Promise will provide personalized, helpful texts with reminders and resources, peer mentoring, and campus visits to keep recent graduates on track for arriving to school in the fall. Presentations focused on financial planning and preparing for campus life will be provided by both Junior Achievement and the Great Lakes College Advising Team. La Crosse Central's Future Center will also be open on a part-time basis this summer to extend advising services to students and families.
