Cost remains a major issue for the Monroe County Justice Center project.

After finally approving a design and location for the facility last year, the next step is to approve the final cost and accept bids for construction, but obstacles still remain.

Monroe County has been working for over 20 years to build a new Justice Center in downtown Sparta. The new facility would include a new courthouse, sheriff’s department, and a new jail.

The County Board met in Sparta on Wednesday night to make a decision on possible construction for a new facility. County Circuit Court Judge David Rice said the County needs a new Justice Center because current jail facilities in Monroe County are outdated.

“We really don’t have any place else to go here. We’ve been at this for years. We had four bids from contractors who were some of the best in the state. They’re all pretty close and I think that’s the price,” Rice said.

Earlier this month, the Justice Center building committee approved Miron Construction’s bid for just over $28 million to build a new Justice Center.

Rice said if the County Board approves this deal, the project is expected to last for two years, and construction could begin as early as late May.

The source of funding for the project is yet to be determined, but Rice said it could be a combination of surplus from the County and borrowing money as well.

We’ll update this story as it progresses.
