Mississippi Valley Conservancy purchases bluff property

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) -The Mississippi Valley Conservancy has purchased a four-acre parcel in the bluffs above La Crosse.

The property has been owned since 1937 by the Gilbertson family. Terry Gilbertson said when he offered the property for sale to MVC, it had long been his father’s wish that the property be open to the public.

Gilbertson said, “I’ve enjoyed these bluffs and I’d like to have other people enjoy them too.”

He said his father had the dream of the land becoming a park, for everyone to enjoy. He added that his grandchildren and great grandchildren can come back to La Crosse and explore what was the Gilbertson family land any time.

Abrahamzon said the property is adjacent to the previously acquired 119-acre Skemp/Lenox land, which can be reached from a trailhead on Highway B. The Skemp/Lennox properties were transferred to the city under the Bluffland Protection Program.

The Gilbertson tract will be open to the public to add to the 970 acres of land in the La Crosse Blufflands that MVC has permanently protected to date, and may be enjoyed by the public for all the generations to come.

The property was purchased using a grant from the Paul E. Stry Foundation.
