La Crosse Community Garden celebrates Community Day

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Saturday was Community Day at the Kane Street Community Garden.

The garden has been slow to start this year due to the colder temperatures but it is now making big progress. They already have radishes, green onions, lettuce, peas, and much more planted. The garden still needs help with other prep projects before more planting can happen.

The garden is always looking for volunteers to help manage and maintain the crops.

Last year, almost 28,000 pounds of produce were harvested from the garden.  The Hunger Task Force distributes this to garden recipients on-site and through 64 partner programs that include food pantries and meal sites, which allows the garden to serve a vast number of those in need in the area.

People can volunteer throughout the summer on Saturdays.  During the spring volunteer numbers are low but as the summer progresses the numbers rise to anywhere from 50-75 people.
