Eagles Take All Four From UW-Superior Over The Weekend

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of UW-Superior Sunday at Copeland Park. The Eagles took the first game 13-3 in seven innings, before taking the second game 18-5 in seven innings. UW-L improves to 19-13 overall and 11-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). UW-Superior drops to 16-13 overall and 7-9 in the WIAC. The doubleheader was moved to La Crosse due to unplayable field conditions in Superior.

UW-L took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Taylor Kohlwey was able to lead off with a double, and later scored on a wild pitch. Bryce Barsness scored on a sacrifice fly by Cole Cefalu.

In the fourth inning, the Eagles were able to plate three more runs to take a 5-0 lead. Seth Feldman hit a two-RBI single to right field to score Joel Zyhowski and Travis Buxton-Verstegen. Kohlwey follwed with a single up the middle to score Feldman. The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Zyhowski was able to single to right field to score Cole Hoyt, who came in to pinch run for Cefalu. Jordan Greenland then ground out to first base to score Alex Cordova who had reached on a single to left field.

The Yellowjackets got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Alex Quinones hit an RBI-ground out to score Tom Fairbanks.

The Eagles added on two more runs in the sixth inning. Feldman and Kohlwey led off with back-to-back singles. Barsness was able to reach on a throwing error by UW-Superior which plated Feldman. Timmy Kehren added a pinch-hit RBI ground out to score Kohlwey.

UW-Superior added on another run in the bottom of the sixth on a Quinones ground out. The Eagles led 9-2 after six innings.

UW-L was able to score four times in the top of the seventh inning. Feldman singled through the right side to score Josh Rowles who reached base on a walk. Kohlwey added another single and Barsness was able to draw a walk. Kehren also drew a walk which plated Feldman. Cordova, then hit a single to score Barsness and Kohlwey. UW-L led 13-2 going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Yellowjackets added on run with a ground out to first base.

On the mound for UW-Superior, Alex Beers (3-3) recorded the loss, tossing 6.0 innings while giving up 11 hits and nine runs. At the plate, Fairbanks finished one-for-three with a run scored.

Ben Cejka (5-2) earned the victory, throwing 7.0 innings, striking out six and giving up four hits. Feldman led the way for the Eagles at the plate, finishing three-for-four with three RBI and three runs scored. Kohlwey finished four-for-five with an RBI and three runs scored.

In the nightcap, UW-L won 18-5 in seven innings. The Eagles were able to take a lead in the top of the first inning when Kohlwey led off with a walk and came around to score on a balk by the Yellowjacket pitcher.

UW-Superior tied it up in the bottom of the inning when Sam Holden hit an RBI-double to score Suguru Homma.

The Eagles plated nine runs in the next two innings to take a commanding lead. In the second, Buxton-Verstegen led off with a walk and scored on a Timmy Kehren RBI single through the left side. Kohlwey added a two-RBI single to score Rowles and Kehren. After a walk loaded the bases, Cordova drew another walk to bring home Kohlwey. Zyhowski scored on a wild pitch. UW-L scored five runs in the inning. UW-L continued to tack on runs in the top of the third inning. Kehren scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kohlwey. Zyhowski followed with a single through the left side to score Rowles. Buxton-Verstegen then ripped a single up the middle to score Zyhowski and Feldman. The Eagles led 10-1 after three innings.

In the top of the fourth inning, UW-L plated two more runs when Kohlwey homered to right center to score Feldman.

The Yellowjackets cut into the deficit by scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth inning. Homma hit a single down the right field line to score Tyler Evans. Tony Remund followed with a double down the left field line to score Wyatt Soderquist.

UW-L tacked on two more runs when Derek Merkes had a pinch-hit two-RBI double down the left field line to score Greenland and Cordova. Following a 42 minute weather delay, Rowles singled to score Merkes to increase the Eagle's lead to 15-3.

UW-Superior scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 15-5. Fairbanks hit a single down the right field line to score Homma and Soderquist.

The Eagles added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Eric Vatch doubled down the left field line to score Merkes. Kohlwey added another hit to score Vatch and Rowles to take an 18-5 lead.

On the mound for the Yellowjackets, Graham Miller (0-2) recorded the loss, tossing 1.1 innings and giving up six runs. At the plate, Fairbanks and Holden finished two-for-four.

Joe Miller (2-3) earned the victory for the Eagles. Miller threw 4.0 innings, giving up five hits and three runs. Kohlwey led the Eagles at the plate, finishing three-for-four with seven RBI, and three runs scored. Rowles went four-for-five with one RBI and three runs scored. Merkes finished two-for-two with two RBI and two runs scored. Zyhowski also added two RBI.

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, April 30 at Copeland Park against UW-Platteville at 1 p.m.
