La Crosse, Wis. – With poor weather on its way, the Viterbo University and Mount Mercy University baseball teams did their best to complete the four game series by moving up the game time and going with limited warm-up time.
Fortunately for the V-Hawks, they were able to score runs early and get through five innings to make the game official before the rain really came down. After a rain delay, the umpire crew determined that field conditions and continued rain predicted that it was time to call the game giving Viterbo a 6-0 win over Mount Mercy.
The V-Hawks got on the scoreboard first in the second inning as they scored four runs on two hits and an error. Senior Luigi Dolenti came up with the big hit for the V-Hawks as he drove in two runs with a single while Matt Watkins drove in a run with a bases loaded walk and Steve Pascual drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Dolenti would provide another big hit in the third inning as he drove in two more runs with a two out single. Mount Mercy would only record a walk after the third inning and never threaten to score.
Senior Josh Thiede (6-2) picked up the win on the mound for the V-Hawks as he allowed just two hits while striking out four in the win. Dolenti provided the biggest offense for the V-Hawks as he finished 2-2 with a run scored and four RBI's.
The loss sends Mount Mercy to 12-29 overall and 8-16 in Midwest Collegiate Conference action. The win moves Viterbo to 28-17 overall and 15-7 in conference play. Viterbo is now tied atop the MCC standings with St. Ambrose University with just two games left in the regular season. The V-Hawks will try to claim their first MCC regular season championship on Tuesday when they host AIB College at 2:00 pm.
