Volunteers needed for annual Letter Carriers Food Drive

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – The 22nd annual letter carriers food drive is Saturday, May 10 and volunteers are needed.

During that day, people are asked to leave non-perishable food items by their mailbox, that food is then picked up from their mail carrier. The drive generated 106,417 pounds of non-perishable food for five local pantries in 2013.

The Great Rivers United Way said community volunteers are needed to help guarantee the success of this annual event. They are looking for 18 drivers, each with a passenger to follow a mail carrier on their route from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. The volunteers will be in charge of pickup up food donations along the way. An additionally, 64 people are needed to man stations, where food donations will be collected, organized, and placed in delivery vehicles. Two shifts, 10:30 am until 2:00 pm and 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm.

The United Way is also hoping to break this years food donation record by hosting “Show Us Your Sign”. They are asking community members, businesses, schools, churches and families to make signs promoting this years food drive.  Signs may be handmade, commercially printed, or even electronic and should include the name and date of the event.

If you have questions regarding “Show Me Your Sign”, please contact Sue Jacobson, President/CEO of the La Crosse Area Postal Credit Union, at (608) 784-2499 or lxpostcu@centurytel.net.

If you are interested in lending a hand, please visit GETCONNECTED, the area’s premiere volunteer website, at volunteer.gruw.org to sign up.

The annual letter carriers food drive is organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), and Great Rivers United Way.
