LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – The La Crosse Warming Center could move to a new location this summer.
Catholic Charities is close to striking a deal to switch to a bigger location. The center, which is currently located at First Baptist Church, can accommodate as many as 19 guests. Warming Center Coordinator Mary Fitzpatrick said the new warming center could potentially house up to 30 guests.
“What we’re hoping to do is to bring programming. There will be office space there so that we can bring in our Saint Louis community services program and case managers to not only work with the people who come into Catholic Charities that are facing some kind of crisis, but also work with the homeless population,” Fitzpatrick said.
Fitzpatrick declined to name the possible new location, but she said talks are “very promising”, and an agreement could be made within the next few weeks. Fitzpatrick also mentioned that there is a possibility the new location could serve as more than a warming center.
“When it was very hot (last summer), there was some talk ‘Well, why don’t they open up the warming center as a cooling center’. The First Baptist Church is not air conditioned at all, but the new location is air conditioned,” Fitzpatrick said.
