LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – A four-story, 126-room Hampton Inn & Suites Hotel could be coming soon to downtown La Crosse.
The City of La Crosse’s planning commission approved an application for a conditional use permit for the La Crosse Hotel Group on Monday evening.
The Hotel Group, which includes Great Lakes Management Group, Central States Warehouses, Kothe Real Estate Partners, Landgraf Construction, and Gibbs Construction, plan to jointly-develop a new hotel on 2nd and La Crosse Street.
Central States Warehouse C.E.O. Cliff LeCleir bought the property across from the Oktoberfest grounds eight years ago, and he said a new hotel would be great for downtown La Crosse—especially because the La Crosse Hotel Group isn’t asking for any assistance from the City of La Crosse, meaning the public will not have to help pay for the new hotel.
The new hotel would be a multi-million dollar project, and Senior Planner Tim Acklin calls it a potential “gateway to downtown” La Crosse.
“Certain events may not come here because they don’t feel like we have enough hotel rooms. With this, maybe things will come to the La Crosse Center, there will be more festivals and conferences which will bring people here. With this, people will come here, shop in our downtown and eat in our restaurants,” Acklin said.
The Hotel Group’s conditional use permit has to be approved by the City Council. If approved, they can apply for building and demolition permits.
Great Lakes Management President Neil Densmore said barring any delays, construction on the site could beginning as early as July 1st.
Densmore said the Hotel will feature an indoor swimming pool, whirlpool, fitness center, meeting room, free hot breakfast and internet, and all 126 rooms will include a 42-inch flat screen television, mini-fridge, and a microwave.
Densmore said best-case scenario, the hotel will be completed as early as May 1st, 2015, and worst-case scenario would be July of 2015.
