Global Awareness competition sparks students' interest in International issues

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - A group of La Crosse students are expanding their knowledge of the world through a "global awareness competition."

To compete, middle school students had to study an area of the world.  Then they had to create a report showcasing the common bonds shared by all people throughout the world. Some topics included worldwide obesity, global warming and women's rights.

The school district says the projects give students an opportunity to work together as a team and they get a better understand of global issues.

"In the fresh water project, I didn't know how little fresh water that was actually available.  It was like 1 percent," said 1st place winners, Sophie McGaff and Rachel Tully.

Wednesday was the global awareness final competition at Logan High School.

Eleven teams competed Wednesday morning. The winning team received a $500 grant for their school to continue promoting global awareness throughout the school.

Additional grants were given to 2nd and 3rd place winners.
