LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - UPDATE: More than 3,000 people packed Riverside Park Saturday for the Grandad Half Marathon, 5K run/walk, cycling events and youth races.
This event started back in 2009 to promote healthy living and getting people active.
On Saturday, the Marathon started at the top of Grandad Bluff and ended at Riverside Park where experienced and first time marathon runners were greeted with cheers of encouragement as they crossed the finish line.
Medical teams were standing by at the finish as well as throughout the course to help runners in case they needed assistance. Volunteers also could be found throughout the course to cheer on the runners as well as help rehydrate them.
Matt Berndt came in 1st with a time of 1 hour, 21 minutes, and 21 seconds. Valerie Hubbard came in 1st for the women with a time of 1 hour, 21 minutes, and 54 seconds.
Three Rivers 5-K and Festival Foods hosted the annual event.
3 434 athletes signed up to compete Saturday and 1,220 competed in the half marathon. The 5K run/walk and omnium cycling races were also popular.
Proceeds go to St. Clare Health Mission, The Youth Enrichment Association, and Special Recreation of La Crosse.
