UW-L Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader with UW-Oshkosh
La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a pair of games with UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles won the first game 5-3, before falling in the nightcap 3-2. UW-L is now 22-14 overall and 14-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Titans are now 17-17 overall and 7-13 in the WIAC. The loss snaps an 11 game-winning streak for the Eagles.
The Titans got on the board right away in the first inning when Trey Demler hit a home run to right field. The Eagles answered back in their half of the inning when Taylor Kohlwey scored on a Travis Buxton-Verstegen sacrifice fly.
UW-L plated two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Joel Zyhowski led off and was hit by a pitch. Cole Cefalu hit a home run to left field to put UW-L ahead 3-1.
After a Demler walk in the eighth inning, Ben Hildebrandt came in to pinch run. Hildebrandt was able to steal second base and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on an RBI-ground out by Zack Whalen to make the score 3-2 UW-L.
The Eagles added two insurance runs in the eighth inning when Taylor Kohlwey hit a two-run homer to right field.
The Titans threatened in the top of the ninth inning, scoring one run on a Zac Peterson single. With runners on first and second base and one out, Jameson Sadowske retired the next two batters by a strikeout, and a fly out.
Ben Cejka (6-2) earned the victory for the Eagles, throwing 8.0 innings, allowing three hits, two runs (two earned), striking out ten, and walking five. Jameson Sadowske earned the save, throwing 1.0 innings, giving up two hits, and one run (one earned). Kohlwey finished three-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored. Cefalu was two-for-four with two RBI and a run scored. Buxton-Verstegen was two-for-three with one RBI.
Travis Sindles (3-3) picked up the loss for the Titans, throwing 7.1 innings, giving up eight hits, four runs (four earned), and striking out three batters. Demler finished one-for-two with one RBI and one run. Ian Czarneski finished one-for-three with a run scored, while Peterson and Zack Whalen each recorded an RBI.
The Eagles scored first in the nightcap. In the third inning, Josh Rowles, Seth Feldman, and Kohlwey led off with infield hits, loading the bases. Zyhowski then hit into a fielder's choice and was able to score Rowles to give UW-L a 1-0 lead.
UW-Oshkosh answered back in the top of the fifth inning when Trent Whitcomb hit a run-scoring single up the middle. The Titans took a 3-1 lead on a Demler home run to right field in the top of the sixth inning.
The Eagles were able to score one run in the bottom of the inning when Buxton-Verstegen hit a double down the left field line to score Kohlwey.
Joe Miller (2-4) picked up the loss for the Eagles, throwing 7.0 innings, giving up ten hits, three runs (three earned), and striking out six. Kohlwey and Rowles finished two-for-four with a run scored while Zyhowski and Buxton-Verstegen each recorded an RBI.
UW-L returns to action Sunday, May 4 at Copeland Park for a doubleheader against UW-Oshkosh starting at noon.
