Logan senior surprised with scholarship in honor of mother's fight against cancer

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - A special surprise for two Logan high school students.

Senior Konnor Reikowski is ranked first in his class with a GPA of 4.0 but he's not the only student with a high GPA.
His friend Lea Gilles also has a 4.0 and is ranked second in her class and at the same time is dealing with her mother's battle with cancer.
Konnor says he felt guilty that he was receiving a scholarship for his high rankings in school when Lea had achieved the same.
So Konnor sent an application to the hope lives foundation for a scholarship for his friend Lea and on Tuesday, Konnor's wish came true.

"I actually had no idea that this was going to happen.  I think I might have mentioned before that I didn't know that this specific scholarship existed and Konnor didn't tell me anything," said Lea after receiving the scholarship.

Co-founder of the Hope Lives Foundation, Garrett Jerue, says, "I think anytime a young person can excel at not just academics but everything else and who also is going through an experience that she doesn't talk about much that's so important to her but goes on and doesn't say that anybody owes me anything, that's the biggest thing for us."

Lea received a $1,000 scholarship from the Hope Lives Foundation.
Lea's mother, Sherry was diagnosed with cancer over a decade ago but came back in 2009 and is currently receiving hospice care at home.
