Pointers eliminated from WIAC Championship by UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. - Top-seeded UW-Whitewater eliminated the third-seeded UW-Stevens Point baseball team from the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship by an 8-1 score on Saturday afternoon at Prucha Field.
The Pointers (29-11) struck first in the top of the second inning but the Warhawks (34-7) scored the final eight runs of the game and got a strong pitching performance from Scott Plaza. In 8.2 innings, Plaza gave up the single run on eight hits, walked one and struck out five.
UW-Stevens Point opened the scoring when a groundout by Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) plated Taylor Carlson (Madison, WI/LaFollette), who had opened the inning with a triple. Carlson was one of two UWSP hitters to have two hits in the game, along with Ben Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton), who was 2-for-2 off the bench.
UW-Whitewater scored three runs each in the third and sixth innings before tacking on single runs in the eighth and ninth. The Warhawks recorded just two hits in each of those innings.
In the sixth, Jared Fon doubled in a run and the scored on Mikole Pierce's two-run home run to center off JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls), who came on in relief of Tyler Flood (Madison, WI/La Follette). Fon was 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the game and had half of UW-Whitewater's eight hits.
Flood did not give up an earned run in three innings and Feyereisen worked four innings in relief before giving way to Nick Prebelski (Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame) for the final three outs.
UW-Stevens Point will find out on Monday if it has secured a spot in the NCAA Midwest Regional, which runs from May 14-18.
