Mayo Health System promotes gardening as a healthy lifestyle

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Mayo Health System is promoting gardening as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Mayo's Facilities Department began planting vegetables, herbs and a variety of flowers.
Registered Dietician Kathy Oslund says its a great way to show the benefits of growing and eating your own vegetables.

"We feel this is a really important way to help educate and inspire people about the benefits of gardening. When you think about gardening, it's so consistent with a healthy lifestyle. We have the benefits of getting outside and getting fresh air, being physically active. Being out here is a stress reducer, listening to the birds, having this fresh air is a wonderful component," says Oslund.

Mayo will feature a variety of recipes in their cafeteria using the vegetables planted in the gardens throughout the summer.
