Winona coffee shop damaged in September fire re-opening next month

Posted: Updated:
WINONA, Minn. (KTTC) -- Eight months ago, a Winona business went up in flames along with several other buildings. Now that local coffee shop is getting a chance at a new beginning as it rises from the ashes.

The Blooming Grounds Coffee House is breathing new life into its downtown business and is set to re-open in June.  It's a change that employees never thought possible before the devastating fire.

Back in September 2013, a fire ravaged the local business after starting in the ceiling of the Islamic Center of Winona on the same block on Center Street.

Now, Blooming Grounds is preparing to open its doors with some big new features inside.

The coffee shop is expanding its space into what was the Pretty Things Boutique, which is not returning, but employees are anxiously awaiting what's new to come.

"We're gonna make it bigger and better basically," said barista, Kaitlyn Carothers. "We're going to have a new countertop and it's basically going to be a wrap-around bar seating area. We're going to have wine and beer -- it will be more of a late-night cafe now too."

Customers will also see new items on the menu at the downtown location, including more appetizers and wrap options.

Construction is still underway at the downtown location, but you can see the workings of the new bar being built.  There will also be more lounge seating inside.

The business has been operating out of its Winona Mall location since the fire.  The Winona City Council approved the liquor license for the business Monday night. Baristas there say the business is already hiring new employees.
