LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – In late April, all pay stations at all of La Crosse’s public parking ramps went online, charging drivers 75 cents per hour for parking on weekdays.
More changes are already in store for those attending special events at the La Crosse Center.
The La Crosse Center is recommending to the city’s parking utility board changes in pay station procedures, as they are proposing to charge drivers $5 for special events, such as concerts, family shows, and games.
The city’s Municipal Parking Utility Board approved the La Crosse Center’s proposal on Wednesday afternoon, as the $5 charge would only be in effect for special events after 5 p.m. at the La Crosse Center.
La Crosse Center Director Art Fahey said problems ahead with this proposal could include parking ramp staffing for special events, and trying to keep enough spaces available for drivers who have reserved parking inside the ramp.
“The daytime parking that is already in there, and then the Holiday Inn parking that is also reserved in there so those guests that already have the privilege of coming in, we’ve got to be able to sort those through between special events that are coming through just for the show,” Fahey said.
Fahey said in order to fix the potential problems regarding reserved parking spaces inside the ramp, the city will ask the Holiday Inn Hotel Group to provide passes for their guests—to prove they are staying at the hotel.
Fahey said even though the proposed new parking charges may be a “change in the process,” it’s not unusual to see charges in a downtown parking ramp for special events.
For this proposal to be officially accepted, it still has to be approved by the La Crosse City Council. Fahey said if these new special event parking rules are put in place this summer, it could be effective as early as September.
