Performance has extra meaning for Blue Angels team member

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - The highlight of this weekend's Deke Slayton Airfest is the appearance of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

For one of the members of the Blue Angels, the performance in La Crosse has special meaning.

Petty Officer First Class Ryan Peterson is from Iowa. His family is coming to Airfest to see the Blue Angels for the first time. Airfest is the closest show to Iowa this season. His hometown is about four hours away.

Peterson said he has a large group coming who are "very proud" of his accomplishments.  He said he'll finally get to show them what he does in the Navy, something his family hasn't seen before.

Peterson, who has ten years in with the Navy,  is in his second season with the team. He's what's known as an Aviation Structural Mechanic.  It means he handles structural and hydraulic systems on he F/A-18 Hornets belonging to the team. He said its amazing to be a part of the Blue Angels.

The Blue Angels perform both Saturday and Sunday at Airfest.
