Cancer Survivors recognized at Shenanigan's

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – It’s National Cancer Survivor Day, and the American Cancer Society held an event for local survivors at Shenanigans.

According to Sarah Siefkes from the American Cancer Society, Sunday’s special day is a day for cancer survivors across the world to celebrate what they’ve overcome.

Roger Matson, Jr., a cancer survivor from Sparta, is currently in remission for bladder and kidney cancer. Matson has had numerous episodes of cancer since he was 12 years old.

“A lot of it has to do with the people around you. You have to pick what’s important to you in life and really keep going after it and don’t ever give up,” Matson said.

Matson said he likes to share with others what he has been through, to help encourage those battling cancer to “keep fighting”.

Siefkes said if any person is interested in getting involved with the American Cancer Society, the program is always looking for volunteers.
