Sparta man charged following standoff with police

SPARTA, Wis. (WXOW) - Charges are filed against a Sparta man after a standoff with Sparta Police Friday night.

Philip Smith,33, is charged with intentionally pointing a firearm at another person and operating a firearm while intoxicated among other charges.

Police said officers responded to call Friday on River Road in Sparta, that Smith was threatening to load his guns and kill people. 

The Monroe County Combined Tactical Unit had to be called in.  Police said Smith refused to cooperate and had to be shot with less lethal bean bags before being taken into custody.

Smith is being held in the Monroe County Jail on at $2,500 cash bond.

SPARTA, Wis. (WXOW) - A 33-year-old Sparta man is in custody after a standoff with Sparta Police Officers.

Among his charges, Philip Smith is booked for intentionally pointing a firearm at another person and operating a firearm while intoxicated.

According to Sparta Police Department release, officers responded to a call Friday that Smith was threatening to load his guns and kill people.

The Monroe County Combined Tactical Unit was called out to the 1900 Block of River Road.

When Smith would not put down his gun, police said they deployed flashbangs and chemical munitions into the house.

Police said Smith came outside, but refused to cooperate. They used less lethal bean bag rounds before taking him into custody.
