Homeless man arrested and charged for railroad tie fire

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – La Crosse Police have arrested and charged a homeless man for starting a pile of railroad ties on fire in the City of La Crosse.

The fire happened about 9:00 p.m. Friday near a railroad track in the area of County B.

According to the criminal complaint, a witness told officers she saw Todd Limestahl, 48, near the railroad ties Friday evening.  The witness reported that when she walked by Limestahl she saw smoldering coming from the pile but she kept walking.  When she turned around, she saw more smoke coming from the pile and Limestahl was still standing near it.

Police said when the questioned Limestahl he denied knowing anything about the fire but police said they found a book of matches in his duffel bag.

Limestahl is charged with arson of property other than a building.

He is out of jail on a $1,000 signature bond.

The fire happened about 9:00 p.m. Friday near a railroad track in the area of County B.

Police arrested Todd Limestahl, 48 on an arson charge and for trespassing on railroad property.

According to the police report, witnesses observed a man in the area of the fire Friday night. Police said when they arrested Limestahl he was carrying matches.

Limestahl is in La Crosse County Jail waiting a court appearance.
