New Northside School vandalized

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Someone broke into the new Northside Elementary School site and vandalized the building over Memorial Day weekend.

It's the second time this year someone has trespassed on the site. Early Tuesday morning workers found vandalism inside the new school.

Project Superintendent Steve Stefferud said someone used paint and gloves that were on site to vandalize a twenty foot wall in the main hallway.

Stefferud said whoever did this had to climb over the fence and break into the building.

"It's distressing to know that there would be people who would disrespect the property and the building so much that they would take that action," said La Crosse Schools Superintendent Randy Nelson.

Workers were able to clean most of it up. The damage is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000. It set the workers back a few hours.

Nelson said "It's a violation of the general public, the dollars that our taxpayers so graciously provided for us to build that new school and to have someone come through and do that is a violation."

There is one security camera on site that records video 24/7, but it doesn't capture the entire building. The school district says they will be adding more security cameras in the near future.

This isn't the first time someone has trespassed on the site property. In February someone broke into a trailer and stole about $5,000 worth of copper pipe fittings.

Anyone with information on either crimes should contact the La Crosse Police Department.
