Local political expert says gay marriage licenses are legally valid

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Questions remain about whether gay marriages can begin immediately or whether the judge will put her ruling on hold while the state appeals.

A ban on same sex marriage is part of the state constitution, it was approved by voters in 2006.

The judges ruling comes in a case brought by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of eight same sex couples.

Political expert Dr. Tim Dale said until the ruling is put on hold all marriage licenses given out are legally valid.

"According to the law any marriage license is recognized as a marriage so people who are getting those licenses now will be recognized as married in the state of Wisconsin", said Dale.

Governor Walker and State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen are strong opponents of gay marriage. Van Hollen announced he will be filing an emergency request to stay the judge's order.
