Brown Stink Bug sighted in La Crescent

Posted:
MINNEAPOLIS (AP)-- Minnesota agricultural experts will try to head off a stinky and destructive bug before it wreaks havoc with state crops.

The brown stink bug is one of the newest invasive species to hit the state, spreading across nine counties in the Twin Cities metro area and showing up in Duluth and southeastern Minnesota.

The bug is known to attack at least 300 kinds of plants and emits a foul odor that's likened to dirty socks. The state Department of Agriculture will try to pinpoint how far the bug has spread in Minnesota. And, University of Minnesota entomologists will try to find a biological control for the smelly insect.

The Star Tribune reports experts say the bugs are especially drawn to apple orchards and have been found near La Crescent, the heart of Minnesota's apple-growing country.
