Students and staff celebrate their last day at Roosevelt Elementary

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Like a chapter in a book, another school year comes to a close and new adventures are about to begin.

"We're just carrying on the tradition," says Roosevelt Elementary Principal Laura Huber.

The last day of school is always an exciting day for students and teachers.  It's the celebration of another year of learning complete and a full summer ahead.  At Roosevelt elementary, however, it's a special sort of commencement.

"Thousands of students have gone through this building in almost the 100 years we've been using it, so it's served us well for that perspective," says La Crosse School District Superintendent, Randy Nelson.
These are the last students to pass through roosevelt's halls of learning.  5th graders are moving on to middle school and the younger classes will continue at the new northside elementary.  One student, 5th grader Kayla, helped shape the new school's identity and shared her story.

"It's kind of fun to tell the little kids what they can look forward to," says Kayla.

Looking back is also rewarding.  The kids say they'll will remember well at least one part of Roosevelt.

"That it has such a good playground," says Hayden, a 5th grader at Roosevelt.

"I hope they keep the playground, cause it's really fun!," says Kayla.

Whatever may come to the spanish style building that served as a school since the 1920's, the future looks bright for Northside education.

"To finally be here, and finally be ready to go is tremendously exciting and rewarding," says Principal Laura Huber.
As with any story, when one chapter ends, another begins. And for Northside Elementary, that chapter begins this fall.
