Viroqua heads to State while others come up short on Sectional Tuesday

ALTOONA, Wisconsin (WXOW)  The Viroqua baseball team will make it's first trip to the WIAA State Tournament since 1985 thanks to a pair of wins Tuesday in the Sectional playoffs.
In the semifinals, Viroqua beat Ellsworth 2-0 behind 16 strikeouts from pitcher Mitch Stalsberg.
Then, in the Sectional final against Somerset, Viroqua brought out the big sticks and pounded Somerset 10-6 to advance to State.
Tyler Gabrielson and Daltan Tryggestad had key runs-scoring hits in the 5th inning that broke open a close game.
Viroqua will play Ripon next week Wednesday at Fox Cities Stadium at 8 PM.

Elsewhere, in division one Holmen lost it's semifinal game against Reedsburg 4-2 in Middleton.
Andrew Shculenberg broke a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the 7th inning.
It was just Holmen's second loss of the season.

Also in Middleton, Central lost to Middleton 2-1.
The key play coming when Brent Kappauf hit what appeared to be a two-run double.
But the Cardinals appealed the play and the umpires ruled that base runner Jerred Ambrose missed third base and was called out.
So instead of a tie game, it was 2-1 and Central was never able to score after that.

In division 3, Westby, who made it to State last year, was shutout by Neillsville 8-0 in Muscoda.

In division 4,  Bangor got a complete game win from Canon O'Heron in their 6-3 win over Augusta in a Sectional semifinal in Wilton.
However, Bangor was eliminated in the final after losing 4-2 to Ithaca.
