Teen accused of setting garage on fire in La Crosse


LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - A teen is arrested by La Crosse Police and accused of starting a garage on fire on the South side of La Crosse.

Police said a passerby noticed a fire in a garage at 1116 South 6th Street around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday and warned the homeowner.

According to police when the fire department arrived, the homeowner was trying to contain the fire with a garden hose. Firefighters were able to put the fire out. Minor damage was reported.

During an investigation into the fire, police said a witness told officers that she had overheard a conversation between Austin Gardner and his cousin as they walked past her that evening.

The witness told police she heard Gardner say 'I just a started a fire and the police are coming'.

Police located Gardner and arrested him for arson of a building with out owner's consent.

The 19-year-old is expected to appear in La Crosse County Court Thursday.
