UPDATE: Woman charged with stealing 15 cats breaks bond

Posted:

LA  CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Another legal setback for the La Crosse woman charged with stealing cats from the Coulee Region Humane Society last month.

Police arrested Lee Ann Shore, 46, Friday night after she violated her bond by contacting the Humane Society to check on the condition of her cats.

Most of the 15 cats she took originally belonged to her until they were removed from her home by animal control officers when they found them living in unsafe conditions.

Shore is accused of breaking into the Humane Society to get them back, most of the cats were recovered a day or two later.

Under terms of her bond to get out of jail, Shore was not allowed to have contact with the Coulee Region Humane Society.

Assistant District Attorney Edward Minser said in court Monday it's a "very significant condition of her underlying bond given the allegations of burglary at that establishment." Minser said that notes indicate the Humane Society is very concerned for their building and their safety.

Shore will undergo a competency evaluation. She is now on house arrest with electronic monitoring and is scheduled to appear in court in August.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - The La Crosse woman accused of stealing 15 cats and kittens from the Coulee Region Humane Society last month stood mute to charges in La Crosse County Circuit Court Monday.

Lee Ann Shore, 46, is charged with burglary, criminal damage to property, misdemeanor theft, and obstructing an officer.

If convicted, Shore faces up to 12 years in jail and fines up to $25,000.

Judge Todd Bjerke said, "Based on my review of the criminal complaint I will find that there is probable cause to believe that a felony was committed that Ms. Shore probably committed that felony and I will bind her over for trial."

The Humane Society said two of those 15 cats have not been found, four have been adopted, and two had to be euthanized because they had respiratory infections and could not take their medication while in Shore's possession.

Shore is scheduled to appear in court again in August.
