EF3 confirmed in Verona, 19 homes damaged from storm

VERONA (WKOW) --- The National Weather Service says an EF3 hit Verona overnight with up to 140 mph winds.

VERONA (WKOW) --- Dane County Executive Joe Parisi says damage done in Verona and other parts of Dane County from the overnight storm are consistent with a tornado.

Verona Police Chief Bernie Coughlin says 19 homes in Verona were so badly damaged they are unsafe for the home's residents.

Coughlin says it's not clear when residents will be able to return home.

Coughlin says Verona's Country View Elementary School sustained major damage to it's roof, siding and other parts of the schools buildings.

Martha Miller's home on Hemlock Drive abuts the back of the school property, and flying debris from the school crashed into her home.

Miller received an alert on her phone, went to her basement, and just minutes later felt what appeared to be a pressure drop. She says she then heard objects slamming into her home.

"I'm fortunate I'm safe. The damage can be repaired," Miller says.

Coughlin says says reports of a family trapped inside a home were unfounded.

Parisi says a County Emergency has been declared for Dane County.  The county's Emergency Operations Center has been active since the onset of the storm.

Parisi adds that emergency text messages and the relatively new system of activating tornado sirens contributed to keeping people safe.

There are no reports of injuries in Dane County from the storm.
