LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW)- A non profit organization called LAF, which stands for the La Crosse Area Autism Foundation, supports children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder by providing education, information and financial assistance to their families and relevant community service organizations. Adam Weissenberger, President of LAF, says the importance of this organization is "to help these families interact and socialize and be with their children. I mean we aren't trying to do anything grand but we are just trying to do something that helps the families out and that's the biggest thing for us."
The LAF Golf Outing was sponsored by Sloopy's Bar and Grill and was held at the Fox Hollow Golf Course. The event was originally planned for May 12, but was postponed until Monday, June 23rd, due to rain. The cost per golfer was $75 and consisted of 4 person teams. Last year, the outing had 32 teams but because of weather the number was lower this year. Within the cost included lunch and dinner, cart, 18 holes of golf and other prizes.
Funds donated to LAF will be used to address any and all kinds of issues in assisting children with autism and their families. The money raised from the outing will give families the equipment they need in order to communicate with their son or daughter. For example, IPads are the most used device among families. Adam Weissenberger, President of LAF, said, "When we can get that device to them, we get lots of letters back from parents saying "Oh my goodness, my child talks to me and I can interact with my child." The simplest things that you and I can take for granted is what the kids have the most problems with."
The LAF is also hosting a 5K and 10K run/walk on July 5th to help raise more money for children with autism and their families. Register online and receive more information about the event on their website at www.laxautism.org or contact LAF directly at 608.618.0523.
