Lake Hallie, Wis. (WQOW) - A local police officer remains on the job for now despite being ticketed for drunk driving.
Part time Lake Hallie Officer Luke Gehweiler was picked up last week by Chippewa Falls police for running a red light, OWI, and refusing to take a breath test. He has pleaded not guilty. Lake Hallie Police Chief Cal Smokowicz says because it is not a criminal matter. Gehweiler is considered innocent unless proven guilty, and no disciplinary action can be considered until the court cases are settled.
However, Chief Smokowicz says refusing to take a breathalyzer test can result in an automatic suspension of a person's driver's license. He says if that happens, Gehweiler will be suspended from work because his job requires a valid driver’s license.?
