VIROQUA, Wis. (WXOW) - The Vernon County Sheriff's department is warning the public about a phone related scam.
The Sheriff's department said the scammer is calling businesses and residents in the Viroqua area and telling them that their electric bill is due. The scammer is then telling people that they must pay the overdue amount using Western Union within 10 minutes or their power will be turned off. The Sheriff's department said a short time later people are receiving a technician call stating that they are coming to their home or business to disconnect the power.
Officials said this is a scam. The phone number used in the scam is connected to a number out of Nigeria.
Vernon County Sheriff John Spears is urging the public to not give out any information to these callers and do not send them any money by Western Union or check.
