LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – A couple hundred men took two laps around Riverside Park in High Heels Thursday.
While it may have been comical to watch, the message behind the walk is very serious.
The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser raises awareness of domestic violence in the 7 Rivers Region.
All money raised goes to the YWCA of the Coulee Region and Gundersen Medical Foundation's Carilee Fund. Both programs offer confidential financial assistance to victims of domestic violence.
One participant on the Festival Foods team, Tad Strittmater, ran the entire way to show his support.
“This is very important. I know a lot of females and customers who are very close to us at Festival as females, and it's good to support a cause like this because if you hit a female, you're not very tough, you know what I'm saying,” Strittmater said.
Many women also walked in solidarity – they're called “sole sisters.”
Last year, walkers raised $30,000. This year, organizers are hoping to far exceed that.
