Current sweeps 2 kayakers under La Crosse Queen dock
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – A strong current pulled two kayakers under the La Crosse Queen dock Saturday afternoon.
According to the La Crosse Fire Department, six people were kayaking where the Mississippi and La Crosse Rivers meet. Two of the kayakers got too close to the La Crosse Queen dock and the current pulled them underwater.
The current swept them about 120 feet, according to the fire department.
By the time emergency crews arrived, all six kayakers were on shore. All of them are safe.
"Any time you have a current above a stationary object, once you get in contact with that stationary object, the current is going to try to push you under. And that's exactly what happened,” said Division Chief Tom Wallerich of the La Crosse Fire Department.
Emergency crews did go into the water to retrieve the kayak.
The La Crosse Fire Department, La Crosse Police Department and Tri-State Ambulance responded.
