Sheriff: Iowa man returned home regarding death of parents

AKRON, Iowa (KTIV/WXOW) - The rural Akron, Iowa man being held as a material witness in the deaths of his elderly parents has been returned to Plymouth County and is now in the county jail.

Forty-four-year-old Jonathan Neunaber was transported by deputies over the weekend from the La Crosse County Jail to the Plymouth County Jail in Le Mars.

Neunaber was taken into custody last Thursday after La Crosse Police stopped Neunaber after a driving complaint.  During a court appearance Friday, Neunaber waived his extradition and agreed to voluntarily return to Iowa.

He has not been charged with anything yet, but he is being held without bond as a material witness in the deaths of his parents, 83-year-old Donald and 80-year-old Esther Neunaber.

Plymouth County Sheriff Mike Van Otterloo said Monday that an autopsy has determined that Esther Neunaber died of blunt force trauma.

Authorities are classifying her death as a homicide.

The cause and manner of death for Donald Neunaber is pending additional laboratory testing.

The vehicle Neunaber was driving at the time of his arrest was seized and is being held in La Crosse.

The sheriff's office and DCI are working to transport the vehicle to the DCI lab in Des Moines where a crime scene team will process the vehicle for evidentiary purposes.

The vehicle is a 2006 Buick which was registered to Donald and Esther Nuenaber.

The sheriff said the investigation is still ongoing.
