Wisconsin Dairy News: New Spot for Family Business

Posted:
THORP, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Since making her first batch of cheese in 2006, Marieke Penterman has been dazzling consumers with her award-winning Gouda cheese. "Last year won the US cheese championship to be given the title the best cheese in the United States, that…yeah, I was blown away. I didn't think we would ever get that far, we always ended up pretty high in the top, but to be actually win the title, that was a very, very proud moment," says Marieke.

With her cheese in high demand, Holland's Family Cheese soon outgrew its old location. "This piece of land has been for sale for many years and we thought well, actually that's a very good location. And at our previous location we just outgrew it with the cheese, and when we looked at this we thought, well it's right by the highway- it's an exit so nobody can close it off," says Marieke.

Located right on Highway 29, the new facility has brought in a far larger consumer base. Holland's Family Cheese store is now a destination for travelers who want to learn about where their food comes from. The dairy farm is situated next to the store and is open for people to tour the facility and learn about the cows that produce the milk for Marieke's cheeses. "We always say we have the circle complete on our farm. We know where the milk comes from, how the cows are being treated, and to showcase that whole process from the beginning up to the table because people can come and sample our cheese here," says Marieke.

Each year the Penterman's have an open house at their farm for the public to learn about their business; this year they're combining it with the grand opening of their new store.  You can visit and tour their farm and facilities July 26th.
