LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – A developer has stepped forward and wants to build homes on La Crosse's Barron Island.
Water Place One is requesting the city to declare land on Barron Island as surplus, meaning it would be available for purchase. Water Place One wants to buy land and develop housing.
The City's Board of Public Works approved a resolution on Monday to deem the land a surplus and make sure there is still proper sewer service available for redevelopment.
“I think with the economy and things going in a positive direction, to actually create tax base and residential development there will be a very significant piece for the city,” Mayor Tim Kabat said. “There's been a number of market studies that have been done, really trying to identify what would be an appropriate use, and residential is the one that continues to be strong, as far as a reuse for that, especially residential that can take advantage of that location right on the river.”
The land needs to be rezoned to make it residential use. A rezoning request will go to the city council this month.
