Salvation Army launches Steppin' Back to School program

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Summer is half over and many kids are already starting to pick out that new back to school outfit.

But many La Crosse area families can't fit the cost into their budget.

The Salvation Army launched its annual “Steppin' Back to School” program Monday.

Volunteers can sign up to supply a registered child with a new shirt, pants and shoes for this coming school year.

Applications to receive the clothes are open to La Crosse County residents in kindergarten through Grade 12.

A lot of it is just being aware of your very own blessings — the things you may take for granted: Of course I'll send my kid back to school. I'll get him a couple pairs of pants, a few shirts – no problem,” said Julie Nelson of the Salvation Army. “But for so many families, that is a big deal. It's a struggle to provide even one new shirt.”

This year the Salvation army is accepting 450 applications for the “Steppin' Back to School” program.

To sponsor a child, call the Salvation Army at (608) 782-6126.
