Relay for Life raises more than $56K for cancer research

Posted: Updated:
La Crosse, WI (WXOW) - Hundreds walked the track at Logan High School Friday night during Relay for Life to fight against cancer.

The event raises money for the American Cancer Society.

Many participants form teams that honor cancer survivors or those who lost the battle.

One of those teams is Bustin' it for Bob. The team supports Dr. Bob Volz, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Gundersen Health System.

Doctors diagnosed Volz with a skeletal muscle cancer. Friday night Volz, and more than 100 friends, family and patients, walked and raised upwards of $15,000.

"I think when someone's diagnosed with cancer you feel like you can't do anything for them. But this is a way to show that we have a lot of support for him, that we're behind him, we're thinking of him, and we're saying prayers for him. I think that that's important to have when you go through such difficult treatment," said Dr. Virginia Wintersteen, Bustin' it for Bob's team captain.

As of Friday morning, Relay for Life raised more than $56,000, surpassing their goal of $55,500. The event ends Saturday at 12:30 a.m. Stay with www.wxow.com for updated totals.
