Crews from Xcel Energy are working to fix a power outage that has affected about 3,400 homes and businesses in the La Crosse and La Crescent area.

An Xcel Energy spokesperson tells WXOW that a lightning strike from the storms that came through Monday afternoon around 3:50 p.m. hit a transformer that took out the power.

The damage from the strike was enough to make the power substation unrepairable according to Xcel.  The utility is in the process of bringing in a portable substation to get customers powered up again.

Due to the nature of getting the equipment set up and tested, it is about an eleven hour process.

Xcel expects to have customers back online by noon Tuesday.
