The calendar reads August 5, but you could feel a cool fall breeze in the air Tuesday morning. It's only natural then that the mind begin to think about high school football.
Tuesday was the opening day of training camp for most teams, and before you know it, we'll be crowning champions in Madison.
La Crosse Logan took to the practice field bright and early, players arriving at the high school well before 8:00 a.m. They spent four hours practicing techniques and footwork, preparing for the first game less than three weeks away.
"We got a good group of guys coming back. A lot of seniors," said senior linebacker Dylan Crocker. "So I think it's going to be a good year."
He has expectations to win a Mississippi Valley Conference title, and so does his coach Casey Knoble. But this week, it's all about evaluating fresh talent.
They can't wear pads for the first few days of practice, but soon enough they'll be pushing each other around on Friday nights.
"It's a lot of footwork. It's a lot of being as physical as we can without pads," Knoble said. "The kids gotta be learning to go full speed and even though we're using bags and things a lot, we still have to try to go through our progressions as fast as possible."
"The speed will definitely go up a notch next week."
