The 7th Annual Three Rivers Roleo Log Rolling Tournament attracted dozens down to the Great River Landing in Onalaska. The tournament was sponsored by Kwik Trip, The Waterfront Restaurant, STIHL, Fowler & Hammer and Onalaska Tourism.
For the last seven years, UW-La Crosse alum Katie Rick, '08 and '12, has been a lead organizer of the tournament, which is now the second highest ranked tournament in the Midwest for professional rollers.
For the first time this year, professionals competed in spikes on Western Red Cedar logs. Spike shoes were traditionally used for traction and provide for action-packed rolling as competitors can grip the log well and fight with every step.
J.R. Salzman, nine-time men's world champion, and three past women's world champions attended the event: Gretchen Greene, Jenny Atkinson and Shana Martin. There ware many competitors from the Coulee Region as well.
The amateur division began at 10 a.m., with the professional division starting at about 2:15 p.m. Admission for spectators was free. The tournament is a partnership with the Onalaska Enhancement Foundation and Onalaska Park & Recreation. The tournament is sanctioned by the US Log Rolling Association.
Greene, from Madison, captured the professional division title over Bangor's Emily Christopherson and Madison's Shana Verstegen.
Salzman captured the men's professional division title over Onalaska's Garrick Birdsong and Madison's Spencer Wilkinson.
