Badgers hope freshman running back is the real Deal

Posted: Updated:
The Badgers enter this season with one of the best running back duos in the country. Now, Gary Andersen just needs to find a third back to provide some insurance for Melvin Gordon and Corey Clement. Andersen is hopeful freshman Taiwan Deal is up to the challenge.

Deal was the Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior at DeMatha High School. The 6'0", 216-pound back rushed for 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns that season. So, he walked on to campus with high expectations despite the fact he knew he would have to earn his way on to the field with the talented returners already on the roster.

"You gotta show coach here on the practice field that you deserve those third running back reps. So, I gotta keep working hard."

Deal has been working to get noticed by the coaching staff. It's not hard to turn heads at Wisconsin when you're wearing #28. Deal not shying away from the thought of carrying the torch from recent Badger greats such as Montee Ball. He knows his opportunities may be limited this season, but he plans to make the most of them much like Clement and Gordon did in similar situations.

"I feel like I bring a combination of speed and power. I can be fast at times, and I can hunker down and run someone over."

The Badgers will find out soon enough if Taiwan will be the real deal.
