Bradley wins GOP primary for secretary of state

Posted: Updated:
Republican Party activist Julian Bradley of La Crosse has won the GOP Wisconsin primary for secretary of state, defeating state Rep. Garey Bies.

Bradley celebrated that victory Tuesday night at a primary party at the Radisson Center with a couple dozen supporters.

Since he first announced his candidacy, Bradley has put almost 40,000 miles on his car to meet with voters face-to-face. It's part of his focus on grassroots campaigning.

Bradley said he wants to make the Secretary of State an ambassador for Wisconsin who shares the governor's accomplishments with state and the entire nation.

"We're going to bring transparency (to the office), first of all," Bradley said. "We're going to make sure people know what the office is doing. And from there, we're going to move on and we're going to make sure that we have somebody that's properly transitioning and helping people when they need to call. You know, (if) you call the secretary of state's office now, you get a recording. That's got end."

Lawmakers have whittled away so many of the responsibilities in the office that the job is nearly obsolete.

Bies was willing to work toward eliminating the office. The 67-year-old pledged to help strengthen or eliminate the office, whichever voters preferred.

But the 33-year-old Bradley said there was no point talking about eliminating the office, since the decision is up to lawmakers. He says he wants to reform the office and work to restore its powers.

Bradley now advances to the Nov. 4 general election. He'll face incumbent Democrat Doug La Follette and Constitution Party candidate Jerry Broitzman.

La Follette has held the secretary of state position since he won in 1982.
