Monroe, WI (AP) -

Sheriff's deputies say a man riding an electronic mobility scooter was struck while crossing a highway in Monroe County.

Authorities say Warren Bennett of Oakdale suffered life-threatening injuries when he was hit by a car on Highway 12/16 Wednesday afternoon around 3:30 p.m.

Monroe County Sheriff's investigators say Marjorie Nauman of rural Sparta was looking in her rearview mirror at a vehicle that was approaching her from behind at a high rate of speed and didn't see Bennett until it was too late. She tried to swerve out of the way, but wasn't able to do so. Bennett was thrown to the pavement in the crash.

He was taken to Tomah Memorial Hospital. There's no immediate word on his condition. The crash remains under investigation.
